Dallas Fuel midseason report card: DPS is flourishing, 'Decay' and 'DoHa' leading renewed team - The Dallas Morning News

The Dallas Fuel are in the middle of a two-week break at the halfway mark of the 2020 Overwatch League season. To help summarize the Fuel’s start to the season, The Dallas Morning News put together a report card for the DPS, tank, support and coaching staff.

We’ll start with the damage line, which was dominant, electric and brought new energy to the Fuel. Other reports will be posted later in the week.

It was one of the best performances by an Overwatch League damage-dealer ever. That’s at least how OWL caster Jake Lyon described it as he watched Jang “Decay” Gui-un cut down each Houston Outlaw player who stood in his way on May 22.

The Dallas Fuel knew they had a good one in Decay. As did the OWL casters, opposing teams and spectators. But Decay, who is averaging 18.8 eliminations, 5.1 deaths and 8,864 damage per 10 minutes, still managed to elevate his performances past expectation each week, providing the Fuel with a star power they’ve never had in the damage position.

Dallas’ 4-6 record at the midway point of OWL’s third season isn’t jaw-dropping. The Fuel had a sluggish opener, starting their third campaign with three consecutive losses. They laid and egg against a solid Paris Eternal team on May 17, too.

The Fuel even had four opportunities to take down upper-echelon opponents, but lost three matches to the San Francisco Shock and another to the Philadelphia Fusion.

But there have been more bright spots in the Fuel’s year than perhaps ever. Head coach Aaron “Aero” Atkins has told The News numerous times that this team adapts as well, if not better, than any Fuel team he’s managed.

That starts with the damage line. Decay, who averages the most damage in the league on Tracer at 9,150 per 10 minutes, is the most dynamic, engaging player for the Fuel in 2020. His performance on Widowmaker as the Fuel steamrolled through their rival in the May Melee tournament will be a checkpoint Fuel fans can smile at for the rest of the season.

And we haven’t even talked about Kim “DoHa” Dongha yet.

The Fuel’s other damage star complements Decay nicely. The two aren’t in-sync at all times, but their elite playmaking and mechanical skill provided them with the necessary tools to make the worst situations winnable.

Decay received the most praise from casters when the Fuel play, but he often got to dominate because DoHa, who has posted 17.7 eliminations, 6.3 deaths and 7,522 hero damage per 10, was a hassle for Fuel opponents, too.

While Decay’s Tracer, McCree and Reaper have been stunning to watch, DoHa brought an element the Fuel desperately needed -- in a year of OWL that introduced hero pools, the Fuel needed players who had a wide range of heroes. Few in the league can make swaps like DoHa.

His Sombra play is what he’s best known for. DoHa is currently a top-five player in the world on the hero in OWL in final blows, eliminations and hero damage per 10 minutes. He’s given the Fuel a lot of options with that hero selection. But the fact that he could pull out Doomfist, Mei, Pharah and now Echo in a pinch gave Aero unlimited options in practice.

DoHa wasn’t perfect. None of the Fuel players were. He had to take the mantle as the Fuel’s Echo player when Overwatch’s newest damage hero was introduced as one of the strongest in the game from her launch. And DoHa wasn’t the best Echo in the league, but he made strides and allowed Decay to play his signature heroes comfortably.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that the damage line was the Fuel’s brightest position. They will dictate whether this team can topple some of the elite teams in OWL.

Fuel DPS grade: A-

Individual grades: Decay, A; DoHa, B+; Dylan “aKm” Bignet, NA; Zachary “ZachaREEE” Lombardo, NA.
