NEW FRANKLIN — Authorities are working to clean waterways after fuel was discovered Monday night in the Portage Lakes .
New Franklin Fire Chief Steve Leslie said an unidentified fuel was found near the state Route 619 bridge, and had flowed north through the Iron Channel all the way into Coventry Township.
Leslie said firefighters responded at about 7:40 p.m. Monday for reports for a product on the water. He said the Ohio Department on Natural Resources called New Franklin Fire to the scene.
The department used floating booms, made of fuel absorbing material, to stop the spread of the fuel and clean it out of the water.
The booms are about 8-inch wide tubes that sit on water. Leslie said the booms are made of a mesh-like material that will absorb hydrocarbons, like fuel, but won’t take in water.
Leslie said the department worked with ODNR and the Ohio EPA and decided to start water flow in the lake, which would move water into the booms so they could clean the fuel.
He said watercraft traffic was stopped last night, but is now open again.
Leslie said firefighters and the Ohio EPA are still working to remove fuel today.
It’s still not known where the fuel came from. Leslie said there were no reports of an explosion. There are two fueling points nearby, one at Dietz’s Landing, and another at Pier 619. Both were visually inspected Monday night, and did not show any leaks.
Leslie said the department will investigate further on Tuesday.
