A new business model for the standard oil change has arrived in Sumter with Take 5 Oil Change on Broad Street.
Franchisee William Mills, who co-owns Take 5 franchises in the Greater Columbia and Charlotte areas, spoke earlier this week on the new "stay in your car," drive-thru oil change operation that's been in town now for about three months.
Take 5 Oil Change, at 1142 Broad St., next to Burger King, opened April 27 during the heavy lockdown period associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, but Mills said he's been pleased so far with the community's reception.
Take 5's model has a focus on quality operations, top-notch customer service and cleanliness, he said.
"Our goal is to get customers in and out in 10 minutes or less once we start performing their oil change," Mills said. "So, it's quick, doesn't disrupt your day. It's easy to stop in on your way to work, on your way home from work, when you are running errands at lunch, anytime throughout the day."
No appointment is needed, and the operation is also open seven days a week for convenience.
In addition to the oil change, service technicians check and fill washer fluid and coolant, check and inflate tires and wash the windshield, among other items, in the regular service price, he said.
Take 5 primarily uses Castrol oil but also offers Mobil 1 and Shell products for diesel engines.
The basic service price, which includes up to five quarts of oil, is $42.99. For cars requiring full synthetic oil, the price is $82.99 for Castrol Edge. Mills added a synthetic blend costs $62.99.
Take 5 also sells additional products to include engine air filters, wiper blades, cabin air filters and coolant exchanges.
A 25% military discount for veterans and active-duty personnel is available all the time, he said.
According to the main website, Take 5 currently has 15 service centers in South Carolina with two more under construction in Easley and Murrells Inlet.
Given the pandemic, Mills also emphasized the oil change is basically "contact-free."
"While the oil change is performed, customers stay in their car," he said. "It's really, pretty much, contact-free service; so, there is no waiting room with a bunch of people. The model works well for helping keep customers safe and limiting contact with other people and employees, which is important in today's times."
