Q&A: OWL caster ‘Bren’ thinks the Dallas Fuel’s path to a strong postseason may require some fortune - The Dallas Morning News

The final weekend of the Overwatch League third regular season is here. The Dallas Fuel have another underwhelming conclusion before them, but have been tasked to build for the team’s future.

Dallas finishes its season with matches against the Toronto Defiant on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. The Dallas Morning News caught up with OWL caster Brennon “Bren” Hook to discuss the Fuel’s matches, and future.

Fuel head coach Kim “Yong” Yongjin likes to be realistic. He felt this meta isn’t a good one for the Fuel, and didn’t provide a comfortable style. What do you think they could do to get past that for one more weekend?

Hook: “The trouble is, the Dallas Fuel have been put into a pretty difficult situation with recent events. The nature of hero pools means there are going to be weeks where it isn’t comfortable for you to play in a certain meta. If I was the Dallas Fuel or any team in this kind of situation, and maybe this is the reason I’m not a coach, I would be putting a lot of practice and emphasis on the weeks ahead with the playoffs.

“At the end of the day, the last week of catch-up matches aren’t going to be affecting seeding as much because the system that determined the seeding is based on match-win percentage. So one win won’t make much of a difference in seeding.

“Based on that alone, I think it’s more worthwhile to put emphasis into practice. You know what the patch is going to be, so for some of these lower-level teams it might be better to focus on that meta.”

Do you think it will be more difficult for the Fuel to rebuild this offseason after a third disappointing season?

Hook: “I think this is probably the best opportunity Dallas has ever had to rebuild. Just off the back of the knowledge that they’ve been keeping a lot of players on the roster that may be past their time with passion for the game.

“If they can move into next year, and the players that maybe don’t want to play Overwatch or don’t fit on the team are gone, they will have budget freed up and can find some real passionate talent from the Contenders scene, which has a lot of talent.

“Dallas might be in a scenario to rebuild to the best they’ve ever been... Sometimes you have to take a couple of steps backwards to go forward. Everything went wrong for the Fuel in a short period of time, but it’s often off the back of that where you make the biggest strides.”

Toronto is the matchup the Fuel have the best chance of claiming this weekend. How do you see Dallas getting that done?

Hook: “I think Toronto has really been humped from Genji being nerfed because the Defiant were a team that found their stride when (Brady “Agilities” Girardi) could play that comfort pick. Now they look quite lost. The thing the Fuel probably need to focus on that would translate into the playoffs is core fundamentals.

“Maybe the meta isn’t comfortable for you, but find something you can play right now and start working on the fundamentals like where you should be and the focus fire. These are things you need to have a good showing in the playoffs. They come as second nature to the best things in the Overwatch League.

“If you want to shock the best teams, you need to show you can do that. There’s no better way to do that than against the Toronto Defiant. This should be an easy win, in my opinion, for the Dallas Fuel.”

What is the best-case scenario for the Fuel in the playoffs this season?

Hook: “I think it would be falling into a meta that suits them. Rumor is the meta is shaping up to be some double off-tank business with Zarya and Roadhog, which is really interesting. Another is that dive is prevalent as well. Dive with Sombra is often used.

“If they can fit into either of them or find a different meta that suits their playstyle and the players they have that is the best-case scenario for the Fuel in the playoffs.

“Let’s face it, falling into a meta that suits you could mean going the distance. The Defiant we a lower-tier team, but then Genji was buffed and Agilities could work in his signature role. Then they had a tournament of a lifetime. That could happen for the Dallas Fuel, if the meta suits them. It’s a bit of luck, but that can happen.”

As usual, could we get a prediction for the two matches?

Hook: “I’d expect the Fuel to be taking the match over Toronto. Dallas Fuel against the Paris Eternal? I think the Eternal are taking that one, however they have a couple things you can exploit. I don’t want to write off the Fuel. I think a couple of keys when preparing for Paris is to exploit its limited hero pools. They don’t have a lot of depth to them and make up for that with fundamentals and really good strategies.

“But they’ve become easy to prepare, and you can come up with some strategies with that knowledge.”
