BROOK PARK, Ohio -- Large underground fuel tanks have been removed from a former gas station at the corner of Smith and Snow roads in Brook Park, marking the next step in trying to bring new business to Brookgate Shopping Center.
“It was a long, long, long road,” said Mayor Mike Gammella in a July 28 interview. “We first had to determine who the owners were, and that wasn’t easy because there were so many layers. Our economic development director, Scott Adams, doggedly stayed on it, and he was finally able to find out who they are. We were able to hold their feet to the fire and make them responsible.”
The mayor also praised State Rep. Bride Rose Sweeney (D-Cleveland), saying her efforts were “a big help” in navigating the process.
"What you're seeing is a first phase of property redevelopment on that corner, which is a key corner in our community," Gammella said.
"We've been trying for years to do something about it," Gammella added, unable to publicly name two parties currently in negotiations to revitalize the parcel.
The next phase of the clean-up entails removing the existing gas station structures, followed soon by a potential new developer revamping the property, according to the economic development director.
"It's something we've worked on for a long time," Adams said, noting it took two and a half years. "As a result of this, we're also hoping to encourage a lease of the former Fifth Third Bank building in the near future."
In addition, he said the city has been working with area landowners in an effort to redevelop the Brookview Elementary School property on Snow Road.
