Preparation is underway at the site slated for a Harris Teeter Fuel Center on U.S. 158 in Kill Devil Hills, with construction expected to be completed before the end of the year. Adjacent to the Harris Teeter grocery store at milepost 9.5 and just north of the Dollar Tree, the site once housed Roanoke Press and Croatan Bookery

Kill Devil Hills Senior Planner Ryan Lang told the Voice that the town has authorized the land disturbance permit, and the building permit is ready to be issued. He noted that the applicant, Harris Teeter Properties, LLC., anticipates having the center open sometime in late December.

The site encompasses just over 80,000 square feet.

According to the site plan, which was approved by the Kill Devil Hills Board of Commissioners this spring, the center will include seven fuel pumps, a canopy, a 540-square-foot walk-in kiosk, and nine parking spaces. There will be two underground storage tanks on the site as well. Restrooms will have outside access.

The project involves relocating the existing northern access onto U.S. 158 further south, eliminating the second existing southern access and creating an interconnecting entrance to the existing Harris Teeter drive isle.

The nearest Harris Teeter Fuel Center to the Outer Banks is in Virginia Beach. The opening of the Kill Devil Hills fuel center will allow Harris Teeter customers to redeem their fuel points at the gas station. Currently, customers can only redeem them locally at the BP gas station in Southern Shores.
