Any drag racer wants to win the historic Big Go. However, for Shawn Langdon, he has now won it twice.
Langdon won the prestigious Denso Spark Plugs U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis in Brownsburg, Indiana. The DHL Top Fuel Dragster pilot defeated Don Schumacher Racing Top Fuel Dragster pilot Leah Pruett in the final round.
The Danville, Indiana native went 3.705 at 326.32 mph to claim the Wally. The Lake Havasu City, Arizona went 5.141 at 145.75 mph in the loss.
“There’s been a lot of hard work that has gone into this team,” Langdon said. “Working with (team owner) Connie (Kalitta) and the DHL team again, I love those guys and they’re all awesome. They proved that today. We’ve had an awesome car the entire weekend and it’s just a great team. How much work they put into this, it’s really impressive. This is an awesome deal, and when I hit the gas I knew we had it as long as we didn’t smoke the tires. I’m trying to give it everything I’ve got and my team did a great job.”
Before this win, Langdon also won the 2013 U.S. Nationals in Top Fuel. In addition, this is his first Top Fuel win since a win at World Wide Technology Raceway, near St. Louis in 2016.
He returned to Top Fuel this season. Langdon spent the 2018 and 2019 seasons in a Funny Car.
Also, Kalitta Motorsports has won the last two Top Fuel U.S. Nationals Wally. Doug Kalitta won the 2019 event, which ended a winless drought for the Michigan native at the biggest race.
Plus, in fact, Team Kalitta has won four straight Nitro Wallys. J.R. Todd won in Funny Car in 2017 and 2018.
Prior to this final round, Langdon had an 8-5 advantage over Pruett. However, this was the first-time that they faced each other in the final round.
Langdon had a huge lead off of the starting line, as he had a 0.015 reaction time. Pruett was late with an 0.091.
The Indiana native never trailed throughout the race. This was his quickest pass of the weekend.
Pruett had problems at approx. half track when she went up in smoke. She then shut it off.
Langdon picked up his first win of the season. This is his 17th career NHRA national event Wally.
Fifteen Wallys have come in Top Fuel, while the remaining two were in Funny Cars.
