SAULT STE. MARIE - The Soo Locks had to shut down briefly on Thanksgiving Day after a fuel leak was spotted as a 730-foot Canadian freighter was going through a lock.

Linesmen working along the Poe Lock - the lock system’s largest berth used by the biggest freighters - noticed an oily sheen on the water around 10 a.m. Thursday as the CSL Tadoussac was inside the lock, according to 9&10 News.

The self-unloading bulk freighter, owned by Canada Steamship Lines, was then brought to the west end of the locks so the U.S. Coast Guard could inspect it.

Only about a cup of diesel fuel leaked from the freighter’s engine before it could be fixed, the Coast Guard told the TV station. A floating boom was set up to contain and collect any visible fuel on the water.

The freighter was empty at the time and was on its way to Wisconsin.

The Tadoussac was built in1969, and its unloading system was upgraded in 2001, according to CSL.

Some ship enthusiasts noticed the brief shutdown at the locks on Thursday. See the social media posts below for photos and video.
