The Dallas Fuel only needed 11 days to enter the conversation for Overwatch League teams that could contend for a title in 2021. But there’s still some work to be done.
Dallas still needs a main tank player, among other roles it could fill.
The Fuel already got the bulk of the offseason work done in quick fashion.
From Oct. 17. to Oct. 28, the Fuel nearly cleaned house before adding five new players and two new coaches. Envy Gaming Owner Mike Rufail brought head coach Yun “RUSH” Hee-Won, damage player Kim “Sp9rk1e” Yeong-han, Choi “Hanbin” Han-been, support player Kwon “Fielder” Joon and assistant coach Go "Aid' Jaeyoon over from the Paris Eternal. The Fuel also added support player Kim “Rapel” Jun-keun from the Houston Outlaws.
Including the extension of Fuel damage star Kim “DoHa” Dongha and assistant coach Kim “Yong” Yong-Jin, Dallas has five starting players and three coaches.
Here’s what to look for as the Fuel continue their rebuild:
Needing a main tank
Tank is the only role the Fuel haven’t filled to complete a starting lineup. Hanbin was a quality building block as his DVa, Zarya and Sigma can hang with the best off-tank players in the world.
What the Fuel need is a player that can play Reinhardt, Winston and Wrecking Ball effectively.
Considering DoHa and Sp9rk1e star as the Fuel’s damage line, Dallas' future main tank will require the ability to enable them.
Some names have been thrown already in the depths of Reddit and Twitter, but the Fuel are still holding trials. Former Atlanta Reign main tank Park “Pokpo” Hyun-jun may fit the pattern of former Element Mystic players, but that doesn’t mean the Fuel couldn’t go for players newer to the scene.
The most important thing Dallas can do is find a player who is teachable. The Fuel already have RUSH, Yong and Aid to guide any player who joins in Dallas, so the Fuel don’t have to limit themselves to veterans.
Rufail said the open tryouts — in which speaking fluent Korean was required — was so the Fuel could find fresh talent that perhaps hasn’t been discovered.
The Fuel would benefit from picking up two more tank players. Another flexible tank would save the Fuel the stress of teaching a new hero during a wacky meta. The recent OWL playoffs featured a Zarya-Roadhog meta that the Fuel didn’t have the pieces for.
Flexibility would grant Dallas the ability to avoid a similar scenario. But before that, a quality main tank is needed.
Filling out the roster
Yes, the Fuel could use a dedicated hit-scan player. Dallas wasn’t able to thrive in an Ashe-Tracer meta in 2020 because DoHa and Stefan “Onigod” Fiskerstrand didn’t have that pool.
It’s ok if the Fuel fill that need last because the DoHa-Sp9rk1e combo is still a force to be dealt with, but having a player who can flex a strong Widowmaker would make the Fuel DPS line as deadly as any in the league.
Dallas also has two flex support players. Picking up a Lucio player would fill the gaps, but the Fuel would survive with Fielder and Rapel in the starting lineup. Their ability to play Ana, Moira, Baptiste and Zenyatta would give them plenty of options that wouldn’t sacrifice healing.
What Fuel fans can be optimistic about is that Dallas only has a few more roles to fill with months of offseason to spare.
It’s already clear the Fuel will look more different than ever.
