TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Hazmat and environmental crews continued cleaning up a fuel spill until after midnight at Forbes Field.

About 1,000 gallons of jet fuel spilled around 5 p.m. Thursday at the Freeman Holdings Fuel Farm on the Topeka Regional Airport Property. Metropolitan Topeka Airport Authority officials say the crews left at around 12:30 a.m. Friday. They say the HazMat Response Inc of Olathe crew will be back sometime today to finish clearing the area.

Walt Frederick, general manager of Million Air for Freeman Holdings, said a fuel tanker truck was offloading fuel into their storage area. He says a valve was put in the wrong spot, so fuel went into the wrong tank and overflowed it. He said the mishap was noticed quickly, and valve closed to prevent any further spillage.

TFD Public Information Officer Alan Stahl said, ”Even pouring a gallon of jet fuel into any type of water source can contaminate millions of gallons of water. Whether that be ground water or surface water so, we’re very concerned about how that stuff is moving. Is it leaching through the soil, are we hitting storm drains or sewers or underground pipes.”

Frederick said the area of the spill is an open field, with no bodies of water, stormwater sewer, or sanitary sewer nearby. He said environmental crews will pull up the soil and clean it to keep any fuel from seeping further into the ground. He said work was underway Thursday night, and likely would continue into Friday.

MTAA officials say the original call was worse than originally thought with the large group of people coming together to take care of it. They thanked the group and said, “They are a great bunch of guys at Million Air.” They say it is unlikely if another instance like this will happen again, but the human-error aspect of it can cause concern. Fredrick agreed saying it’s likely it will not happen again and that it was a mishap.

The MTAA, Shawnee Heights Fire District, 190th Air Refueling Wing Fire Dept., Topeka Fire Dept., Kansas Fire Marshal’s Office, and Shawnee Co. Emergency Mgt. all responded. HazMat Response Inc of Olathe and Evergy’s Lawrence Plant also assisted.
