Dallas head coach ‘RUSH’: Fuel played poorly in loss to Paris, need ‘Rapel’ for OWL championship - The Dallas Morning News

Every decision Yun “RUSH” Hee-won makes with the Dallas Fuel is with the Overwatch League Grand Finals in mind.

The Fuel’s head coach has until Sept. 16 before the playoffs begin, and he wants Dallas to be in top form with a flexible style and comfort on more than just the rush composition that skyrocketed the Fuel into title contention.

A 3-2 loss to the Paris Eternal Friday was a blemish on the Fuel’s season. Dallas tried out the new OWL meta that demands a Wrecking Ball with a Zenyatta, Brigitte and even a Pharah. While the loss wasn’t the result the Fuel were looking for, the scrimmages and integrating Kim “Rapel” Jun-keun into the lineup was difficult throughout the past week.

Kim hadn’t loaded into an OWL match with the Fuel since April 25 against the Boston Uprising. Dallas had Kwon “Fielder” Jun as the flex support, mostly playing Moira, in every match since then before Friday.

Getting Kim into late-season form while integrating a strategy made popular in the East region and now being adopted by the Fuel and other West teams wasn’t all daisies.

“To move on from this, (Kim) has to keep today’s match in mind, adapt and fix his mistakes,” Yun said via interpreter. “He definitely has been showing his weak side during scrims as well, but this player is definitely someone I think we will need for the Grand Finals.

“We need him to regain his mechanics and be back on his peak performance.”

Neither Paris nor Dallas were polished on Friday. Paris crumbled in a few late-map moments, and that’s when the Fuel’s clutch gene thrived. But Dallas made positional errors and Kim was the first to fall in fights on Zenyatta often.

Lee “Jecse” Seung-soo, who spent most of his season on main support playing alongside Kwon, said he didn’t notice anything difficult about playing with Kim. But he did feel the Fuel’s errors on Friday were more costly than any highlight play the Eternal made.

“The most common mistake was probably not getting much value out of our ults and getting picked often,” Lee said via interpreter. “If we had fixed those problems then I believe our outcome would have been different.”

Fixing problems is something the Fuel will need to do a lot of in the coming weeks, but they also have patching up to do Friday night. The San Francisco Shock awaits the Fuel at 5 p.m. CT Saturday, and Yun expected the Shock to be strong with Zenyatta, Brigitte and Dva. He wasn’t sure if the Shock would be any better than the Eternal were, but they could have a leg up on the Fuel in the meta.

Yun knew this meta would be prominent again. The Dallas rush composition that highlighted Lucio, Winston, Moira and Echo was actually made by the Fuel to counter the current meta.

That’s not an option now, and the Fuel have to adapt again if they want to be in top form for Saturday, let alone a world championship in seven weeks.

“We are at a point where we will have to constantly improve from now on, and we will have to put in even more effort,” Yun said. “Our end goal and our purpose for all of this practice is to win the Grand Finals. So regardless of the outcome today, we just have to make sure we do better.”

The Fuel have exploded into the elite category before. Can they do it again as the season winds down and the pressure creeps in?
