The Dallas Fuel were already struggling to replicate what made them so great during their May Melee title run in scrimmages over the last two weeks. Experiencing an unconventional playstyle and rookie main tank player made for a choppy performance in the Fuel’s 4-3 win over the Florida Mayhem Saturday afternoon.
“What we saw today was basically something that you don’t really normally see,” Fuel head coach Yun “RUSH” Hee-won said via interpreter. “It’s was an unusual comp. And because we had not practiced against that recently, I feel like our boys were a little flustered.”
Dallas was unstoppable in moments. The fifth map passed like a whisper. The Fuel secured their first win of the Summer Showdown stage without resistance.
The Mayhem caused the Fuel an awful lot of trouble in the series though, playing an Orisa composition and aggressive playstyle behind newcomer Baek “Checkmate” Seung-hun.
Checkmate’s strategy with the Mayhem in the first map was to charge in with Reinhard with hopes of getting all of the Fuel’s cooldowns out of the way early in the fight.
When it worked, it felt more like luck, Fuel offensive tank player Choi “Hanbin” Hanbin said.
“It almost felt like they were gambling,” Choi said via interpreter. “He’s playing with his eyes.”
Fuel assistant general manager added on to Choi’s statement, saying Choi may have felt as if Baek wasn’t playing with his head.
To Baek’s credit, playing against the top team in North America for his first match was a hard task. Yun was more delicate talking about Florida than his tank player, true to form. He understood what Florida was going for with the strategy.
What was more concerning about the Fuel’s performance was how they responded to Checkmate playing Orisa. The more stationary tank put the Fuel in uncomfortable team fights, and it resulted in unforced errors.
The Dallas Fuel DPS line had a forgettable afternoon, with Kim “Sp9rk1e” Yeong-han and Kim ‘Doha” Dong-ha making self-inflicted errors that snowballed into lost maps. That was most evident in the Fuel’s loss on Hollywood, which forced a fifth map.
“For us, the first fight was very important. But because of how we ended up giving the opponent a lot of old charges, and constantly giving them the advantage,” Yun said. “It ended up snowballing really fast, mainly because of Sp9rk1e … It ended up putting us in a really difficult situation.”
Yun’s worry about his group has always been how well they can adapt to new situations. He used the Shanghai Dragons for example. Dallas obliterated Shanghai in the first round of the June Joust in Hawaii, but the Dragons answered with a map-seven win in the tournament championship, snatching a second trophy away from the Fuel.
Atlanta might not play as weird of a style as Florida, but they liked the double-shield meta in the June Joust when many teams were running Winston and DVa, like the Fuel.
So Dallas could run into similar issues when the two meet at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday. Yun seemed less concerned about that match though, considering the Saturday struggles to be a “minor brain freeze.”
“I believe tomorrow will be better because we got our practice in today. Normally, players do learn as they play, and they develop into better players through experience,” Yun said. “Like our tournament in Hawaii for example. Even if you don’t perform well at the beginning, they might progress and become better towards the end.”
The Fuel have always had their eyes on the end game. Any match win or tournament run has been with the goal of an Overwatch League championship.
Getting past the more bizarre matches will always be a part of that, especially if the Fuel escape those with wins.
