JetBlue Adds Sustainable Fuel to Los Angeles Operations - Business Travel News

JetBlue this month began using sustainable aviation fuel for aircraft at Los Angeles International Airport via a partnership with World Energy and World Fuel Services.

Through the partnership, JetBlue will increase use of blended sustainable aviation fuel by 1.5 million gallons per year for at least three years, about 5 percent of the fuel JetBlue uses at LAX, according to the carrier. World Energy will supply its fuel, made from inedible agricultural waste, to JetBlue from its Paramount, Calif., facility, and World Fuel Services will manage delivery to the airport. World Energy's fuel reduces emissions by 80 percent per gallon before it is blended with petroleum jet fuel, JetBlue said.

JetBlue is the second U.S. carrier to use World Energy's fuel in its regular operations, according to the carrier. World Energy also is United Airlines' sustainable fuel supplier in Los Angeles.

JetBlue already has been working with another supplier, Neste, to use sustainable fuel for its San Francisco operations. The carrier is working to increase use of sustainable fuel in its focus cities "as it becomes available," according to JetBlue director of sustainability and environmental social governance Sara Bogdan.

"It has not historically had the same policy support as other low carbon fuels and comes at a premium today," she said in a statement. "We're excited by the prospect of additional policy support to help grow and scale sustainable aviation fuel, helping to usher in a lower-carbon future for aviation."
