Not a single member of the community showed up at the Aug. 10 Eagleswood Township Land Use Board meeting to oppose Eagles Nest Airport’s preliminary and final major site plan application to build two new 10-bay hangars at the airport. They would add 11,500 square feet of hanger space on top of that of its two existing hangars. A new fuel storage tank and gas pump would also be installed to service them, and eight new parking spaces would be added to accommodate the pilots who would use them.
The meeting was genial, and the hangars themselves stirred little discussion. In fact, it was the new fuel tank that dominated the conversation.
Part-owner and Eagles Nest Pilots Association President Peter Weidhorn blamed his “own cheapness” as the reason for a new storage tank. When he first put in a fuel tank after he bought the airport in 2009, he originally planned on a 10,000-gallon tank. But Weidhorn ended up going with a 6,000-gallon tank to save money.
He should have realized, he told the board, that you can’t use the last 350 gallons in a tank due to sediment buildup. And you can’t fill it up to the top because you need to have some air in the tank. With business building at the airport, a second tank is necessary. Besides, with two tanks he could “more effectively” buy fuel – he now is splitting loads with other airports.
Finally, the Federal Aviation Administration is developing alternative fuels, “not just low lead.”
“We want to be lined up to take advantage of alternative fuels in the future,” said Weidhorn, and “you can’t mix.”
Mayor Debra Rivas asked if Eagles Nest would supply the town’s fire department with more firefighting foam due to the new tank.
“Of course we will,” said Weidhorn. “I sent a contribution to the fire department last year. We just want to be good neighbors.”
In the end, the board unanimously approved the Eagles Nest site plan. —R.M.
