Davis Oswalt ripped a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to give the Tupelo 49ers a 12-10 victory over Jesuit-based Retif Oil, ending the season for the New Orleans squad at the American Legion Southeast Regional at Pelham, Alabama Saturday.
The home run capped a stirring comeback by Tupelo, which trailed by seven runs before rallying as the game went to extra innings.
The 49ers struck first, scoring twice in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Stone Collier and a sacrifice fly by Ben Davis but Retif Oil responded quickly, putting up five runs in the bottom of the first.
Tripp Haddad plated a run on a bases loaded walk before Luke Brandau singled home a run to tie the game. Holden Hess and Hayden Morris each drew bases loaded walks to make it 4-2 and Keith Pittman completed the big inning with an RBI groundout and it was 5-2 after one inning.
Retif Oil followed up the big first inning with a big second inning, scoring four runs to make it 9-2. Morris had a two-run double and two more runs scored via an error.
Tupelo scored twice in the fourth inning to make it 9-4 on an RBI single by Alex Marshall before a wild pitch scored the second run.
Tupelo erupted for six runs to take a 10-9 lead. Collier had an RBI double, Noah Foster produced a run with a bases loaded walk. Easton Hood then delivered the big blow, belting a grand slam to make it 10-9.
The Oilers responded as Brandau delivered a game-tying RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 10-10.
In the top of the eighth, Oswalt gave the 49ers the lead with his home run but Retif Oil did not go quietly, cutting the deficit to one on an RBI single by Haddad but that was all the Oilers could muster.
James Armstead picked up the win in relief, going the final 2.1 innings, allowing one unearned run. Adam Adkins got the final out for the save. Gates Barre took the loss in relief for Retif Oil.
Tupelo advances to Florence, South Carolina Sunday at 2 p.m.
