The Dallas Fuel needed a win against a weaker opponent like the Washington Justice and they got it. The Fuel got to debut their Echo strategies and styles, but it was other parts of those compositions that truly shined in the Fuel’s 3-0 sweep of the Justice Saturday afternoon.
Here are four takeaways from the match:
Echo? How about Tracer
Kim “DoHa” Dongha came out the gates on Nepal on Echo for the Fuel. Either of the Fuel damage stars were capable of making Overwatch’s new game-changing dps hero work, but DoHa had a larger hero pool range.
Also, Jang “Decay” Gui-un might be too good on Tracer to pass up that pick. When DoHa was on Echo, Decay was on Tracer and that provided the Fuel with unlimited mobility and angles for engagement. The Dallas tank line benefited from the two damage picks early by having space on the objective. DoHa had some good moments early on Echo, but Decay’s Tracer gave Washington a lot of trouble.
A different Fuel
OWL caster Robert “Hexagrams” Kirkbride noted during the YouTube broadcast that Hollywood was one of the worst maps for the Fuel in team history, no matter who was on the roster. It was the only map where the team struggled to even complete all the objectives, let alone do it with time left in the bank.
The Fuel ignored history and finished the map with time to spare and did it with convincing team fights. Decay was the catalyst again on Tracer. His role on that hero has proven to be one of the most unstoppable forces in OWL this season.
The Fuel were far from perfect, but they are not the same team that couldn’t complete maps or lost on repeat.
Take NotE
It’s time to recognize Lucas “NotE” Meissner for his significant improvement in the offensive tank role. It’s not much of a brag to beat up on the Washington Justice, but NotE has made nullifying the enemy ultimates a theme of his.
NotE is best known for his Dva play, but he’s also made Sigma work in recent matches. With Echo and Tracer being popular picks for the Fuel on the dps line, it made sense for NotE to be plugged on Dva. He ate a Mei ultimate to secure the first round on Nepal to start the match, and those plays can be back-breaking
NotE has stepped up and elevated his gameplay. With him dominating, the Fuel can reach their ceiling.
Taking care of business
Dallas needed a win over Washington on Saturday. Fuel head coach Aaron “Aero” Atkins called it a “must-win” simply because his team’s schedule will get more difficult in the coming weeks and dropping a match to a struggling team like Washington could come back to bite them.
Dallas’ next opponent is Philadelphia on May 10, and the Fusion (9-1) have spent their season at the top of the OWL standings. Not only did the Fuel get the needed win over the Shock to even out their record, but they got the clean sweep, giving them a rest in the map win-loss category, too.
