A few takeaways following Dallas’ lopsided loss to Paris on Sunday...
The booping FDGoD
OWL caster Jake Lyon described the first round saying, “I feel like the Fuel didn’t even get to play the round.” That was mostly in part to Eternal support star Brice “FDGoD” Monsçavoir’s masterful performance on Lucio.
The Fuel had a sloppy start on the first round of Lijiang Tower against FDGoD and the Eternal, but they still achieved 74% capture time before heading into a far less impressive round. The Lucio was definitive for the Eternal, getting environmental eliminations one after the other and booping Fuel tank player Noh “Gamsu” Youngjin out of position consistently.
The Fuel’s only chance of claiming the point came from a Sombra ultimate by Fuel damage player Kim “DoHa” Dongha, but FDGod avoided that, too.
FDGoD countered the EMP with his own ultimate and secured the round for Paris to take an early 1-0 lead over Dallas.
Too much Echo
It wasn’t a shock to see Paris damage player Nicolas “NiCOghd” Moret on Echo considering he’s had success on Overwatch’s newest hero, but Dallas still didn’t have an answer on Temple of Anubis.
The Fuel were thrown into a 2-0 hole on Sunday after NiCOgdh had his way on Echo. DoHa tried Echo himself, and eventually had to swap to Reaper to try and find more value in his own damage role. He never quite achieved his typical effective gameplay and the Fuel’s other damage star Jang “Decay” Gui-un was left to eliminate NiCOgdh by himself. That proved an unfair task.
Dallas DPS players were often the first to fall. As a result, the Fuel didn’t get any true attacks on the final point of the map.
Absolute roll
The OWL casters did their best to find advantages for Dallas in a dull performance, but Andrew “ZP” Rush eventually had enough.
“This has gone from a somewhat back and forth game to and absolute roll,” he said on the OWL YouTube broadcast.
Oddly enough that statement came before the Fuel’s best stretch of the series as Decay found his footing and the Fuel were able to get a bit of momentum. It was hardly enough as Paris’ attack was far faster. Dallas had a far from encouraging performance and the Eternal rolled through the Fuel’s mistakes.
Need a reset
This was the worst the Fuel looked in a while. They tried several compositions and none of them halted Paris. The Eternal effectively ran the same compositions they did last weekend without Terence “SoOn” Tarlier on the Tracer, but Dallas appeared unprepared.
The Fuel had given top teams all they could handle in their previous matchups this year, but the Eternal showed they were more prepared to make that leap into the upper echelon of OWL for now.
So, Dallas could use a reset. The May Madness tournament is around the corner and the Fuel can make some noise with a mental recovery and a couple wins. They need to learn from this match, and quickly move on.
