Keep dogs safe around oil diffusers - Boston Herald

We are blessed to have a 2-year-old poodle in our home that is an important part of our family.

Our child has some medical issues and one of the treatments that has been prescribed is the use of an oil diffuser primarily using lemon and oregano oils. It would be designated only to the child’s bedroom, and we would keep the dog out of that room, but we want to know if there is any risk to the dog since I have read that various oils can be harmful to pets.

Do you know if these oils are safe? Are there any that we should avoid? I think we are taking the necessary precautions but just want to be sure.

I believe you are taking the right approach and precautionary measures. There are some “essential oils” that are safe for animals to be used topically. These include eucalyptus, lavender, chamomile and others. They can also be helpful when treating certain conditions involving the skin and more. In a few cases, the use of diffusers or aromas instead of topical applications can be helpful.

Pet owners can get into trouble if and when pets ingest the oils or inhale too much or the fragrances can cause respiratory issues, such as burns to the airways. There are many oils that are listed in the literature as potentially harmful that should never be used, one of them being oregano, so you may want to rethink using that. Lemon oil is not recommended with cats but seems to be safe for dogs.

What you are seemingly going to do is limit the use of the diffuser in the house and provide for good ventilation. I expect that will be safe but to be sure, I would contact the Pet Poison Hotline and the company that is producing the oil you will use to ask about safety. Watch your dog for possible reactive clinical signs such as vomiting, drooling, difficulty breathing or anything different from normal, and be sure to keep the oils away from the dog for fear of ingestion.

Lastly, remember that dog senses of smell are much stronger than those of humans and they can be overwhelmed more easily. I hope your child’s medical issues improve or resolve.
