There were two maps against the Washington Justice that Lee “Fearless” Eui-Seok wanted back in the Dallas Fuel’s 3-1 loss Saturday evening. The Fuel are still dealing with nerves in the early stages of the 2021 season, and Lee felt the butterflies on the first map against the Justice.
“If I could just go back in time, I would go back to the first map and then make sure that we’re okay feeling alright and confident so that we can actually win the map,” Lee said via interpreter.
The Fuel were hardly stomped by the Justice, a team deemed by Overwatch League experts as an early title contender. Washington, led by two ex-Fuel members Jang “Decay” Gui-un and Jung “Closer” Wonsik, made a splash in the team’s season debut.
The Fuel are still making minor mistakes. They don’t feel small to the Fuel players, but every map was tightly contested against the Justice. And the Fuel talk about their mistakes after every match and every scrimmage, sometimes even between maps.
With nerves comes passiveness. That’s where Fuel head coach Yun “RUSH’ Hee-Won felt the Fuel lacked.
“I feel like we weren’t really paying attention to what the enemy was capable of doing at the given situation,” Yun said via interpreter. “So I’d say that we lacked awareness that we need in the map in not realizing that you’re able to either counter or make plays off of the given situation.
“I would say the biggest problem that we had today was that we were too passive on our turns when we were able to win.”
Long season ahead, incredibly proud of the team and how they have handled adversity. We will come back much stronger #Fuelfighting

The Fuel didn’t have the arsenal that the Justice did, with four damage players available and virtually every important hero covered in their pool. The Fuel don’t even have a hitscan player still after Jung “Xzi” Ki-hyo announced his temporary retirement a week before the season’s start.
The Fuel are playing a man down, and are having to work smarter and harder. Lee said what made his former Shanghai Dragons team special was the amount of smart players on the team. Lee is impressed by his offensive tank partner, Choi “Hanbin” Han-been, but Dallas only having seven players has resulted in trial and error with strategy.
“The biggest thing is that there are limitations to what we can do. And from an opponent’s point of view, it’s really easy for them to catch that,” Yun said. “So there are so many things that we, as a team that has one less essential player, have to think about. But the enemy has even less things to actually prepare and think about.”
Suffering two losses in the first three matches was hardly in the itinerary for a Dallas team that wants to compete for stage titles and Overwatch League hardware. But losing early might be necessary, because it’s how the Fuel are finding their holes.
What the Fuel do have going for them is their star players taking responsibility. Damage player Kim “Sp9rk1e” Yeong-Han shouldered blame after the match, and Lee also regretted the team’s lack of communication when attacking on Hanamura. That was the second map he wanted back.
“I felt like we were at a point where we stopped talking and there were less plans being made,” Lee said. “And that’s where we got stuck and that’s what I’m most regretful about.”
The Fuel have one more pool play match before the first tournament of the season, a date against the Boston Uprising at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
Boston didn’t get off on the right foot either, getting swept by the same Los Angeles Gladiators team the Fuel dropped in the first weekend of the season.
“So there’s not much that we can change,” Lee said. “But, you know, even if we fixed that one big problem that we had today, I feel like we could easily throw them.”
Cool down the nerves and avoid being passive in important moments and the Fuel could equalize their record before the first big test of the season.
