The Dallas Fuel (2-2) players pulled off a necessary 3-0 win over the Boston Uprising (0-2) Sunday afternoon, but didn’t start smiling about their accomplishment until the coaching staff went to rub their shoulders and pat their backs.
The Fuel needed near perfection on Sunday. Losing two of their first four matches put them in a bind, and they not only needed a win, but a clean one against Boston to have a fair chance at qualifying for the May Melee.
“We were definitely desperate for a 3-0 today and I guess because you were able to see how thirsty the boys were or for a victory for each map,” Fuel assistant coach Go “Aid” Jae-Yoon said via an interpreter. “You could probably tell that it was very important for us.”
The Fuel players expect a lot from themselves. Support player Kwon “Fielder” Joon went as far as saying the Fuel could win an Overwatch League title if they chopped out mistakes.
But the Fuel played their first four matches limited by personnel. Losing Jung “Xzi” Ki-Hyo before the season began left the Fuel without a hitscan player. Kwon said the Fuel were off to a decent start considering they didn’t have a McCree player to mirror their opponents.
The Fuel players beat themselves up over any mistake. It’s enough to make them apologize after wins. But not having a dedicated hitscan player made perfection all but impossible. The Fuel can’t do what their opponents are doing, and may not be able to for a while until a hitscan player lands in Dallas.
“Because we are not able to do that, there is a lot of time wasted on trying new things,” Fuel head coach Yun “RUSH” Hee-Won said on Saturday. “And we end up needing more time and it’s in the end ultimately a lot more difficult.”
What the Fuel accomplished in two weeks could be enough to make noise in the first regular-season tournament of the young Overwatch season. The Houston Outlaws (4-0) emerged as a contender, and the Washington Justice (2-0) were clean in their debut over the Fuel.
Those are the two teams that defeated the Fuel, and neither had to work around a lack of a hitscan player, making the Fuel’s mistakes in matches more punishable.
“Because we cannot use McCree in our with our given lineup, it’s like as if we have our own ban system implemented to our team,” Go said. We pondered about what we can do in order to overcome this hardship so we experimented a lot of different things and we decided to go with the best picks that we could come up with and that’s how we ended up going 2-2.”
But the Fuel were hardly satisfied, even after defeating Boston. Lee “Jecse” Seung-soo even apologized on Twitter after the match, despite the 3-0 score.
Go said the players hold themselves to high standards, and that in the heat of matches they often lose track of their individual goals.
“They end up posting their true emotions on Twitter,” Go said, “because they know themselves that they could have done better and they are not very satisfied with their performance overall.”
Regardless of imperfections, the Fuel got their necessary result. Securing the 3-0 guaranteed the Fuel win any tiebreaker with the Los Angeles Gladiators (2-2) for the May Melee. Only six teams will compete from North America, and the Fuel are one of those six at the moment.
Florida (2-0), Toronto (2-0), Washington (2-0), San Francisco (1-1), Paris (1-1), Atlanta (0-2), Boston (0-2) and London (0-2) still have matches to complete before the dust settles.
But the main threat to the Fuel is Paris. San Francisco, Washington, Florida and Toronto can all qualify and Dallas would still secure a spot. Houston is already a lock.
If Paris were to defeat Atlanta and Florida next week, the Fuel might be the first squad out.
