Reader's View: State scores early win in fight against Big Oil - Duluth News Tribune

As a climate activist and aspiring lawyer, I was happy to see that on March 31 Minnesota won an early victory in the state’s legal fight for accountability from Big Oil.

A federal judge ruled that Minnesota’s lawsuit against ExxonMobil, Koch Industries, and the American Petroleum Institute for misleading consumers about the dangers of fossil fuels belongs in state court where it was brought. The judge called Big Oil’s arguments for moving the suit to federal court “a caricature” and the state’s suit a “well-pleaded consumer protection action,” according to Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison.

Perhaps Big Oil keeps fighting this procedural question and losing in all the climate accountability lawsuits being brought around the country because it knows it is guilty and is scared of going to trial. The fossil fuel industry's lying deliberately delayed action on climate change. There’s a wealth of evidence, including internal memos, to prove it.

Minnesota’s case is strong. We have a chance to be a leader in these exciting efforts to secure climate justice and this decision is our first step on the road to doing so.
