‘Sp9rk1e,’ Dallas Fuel could become ‘headache’ for opponents after decisive 3-1 win over Gladiators - The Dallas Morning News

Lee “Jecse” Seung-soo wasn’t happy about his mistakes against his former Houston Outlaws team on Friday. The Dallas Fuel’s dominant 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Gladiators Saturday night made that Houston loss even more frustrating.

How?

The Fuel showed their quirky strategies and hero picks work, especially if they don’t make self-inflicted errors. It could even develop into a bigger advantage than experts may have anticipated.

The Dallas Fuel were clean, methodical and even oppressive in their fights against a Gladiators team that was projected to be one of the three best squads in North America this season by Overwatch League analysts.

“Yesterday was our first match. There’s a lot of anxiety and mistakes that stem from that,” Fuel assistant coach Go “Aid” Jae-yoon told The Dallas Morning News via interpreter. " But today, the biggest difference is that we were able to execute what we were preparing this entire time. And we knew that as long as we minimize the mistakes that we’re making, we can win against anyone.”

Behind a big day from Kim “Sp9rk1e” Yeong-han on Tracer, Lee “Fearless” Eui-Seok on the main tank role and a turnaround from the Fuel support line led to the upset win.

The mistakes from Friday — most notably moments which a Fuel support player would be the first to go down in a team fight — were all but erased. Seung-soo credited Fuel assistant coach Go for that. Go is in charge of the Fuel’s support line, and he gathered them to review mistakes on Friday.

“It’s just a shame that you know the match against Houston was such a winnable match. We ended up losing because of my mistakes,” Seung-soo said via interpreter. “I feel like the reason we won was probably heavily weighed on that feedback session.”

The Fuel aren’t putting much stock into preseason predictions. Dallas was expected to take a big hit when hitscan player Jung “Xzi” Ki-hyo retired and the Fuel only had Kim “DoHa” Dong-Ha and Yeong-han, two flex-DPS players.

But Dallas turned its weakness into a strength, and Yeong-han was winning his Tracer duels. The OWL desk all predicted the Gladiators to win, and The Dallas Morning News, too. Los Angeles played well in a 3-1 loss to the back-to-back world champion San Francisco Shock on Friday.

That suggested a Gladiators win, but the Fuel were a problem at every turn. Dallas actually benefited from Sp9rk1e playing an off-meta pick like Doomfist. Fearless won his tank battles repeatedly in the front line. The Fuel appeared a well-oiled machine.

These are all things that are uncommon for past Dallas Fuel teams. This Fuel team seemed to think it should be expected now.

“I am not too comfortable talking about the past performance of Dallas fuel, but I feel like what we have been trying to do is just reach the expectation that our org has on our team members, our players and the coaching staff,” Go said. “So we worked really hard and that’s what brought us quality performance.”

Seung-soo wasn’t sure how good the Gladiators actually were, even though he was pleased with his team’s performance. But at the same time he’s not immediately concerned about the Fuel’s lack of a dedicated hitscan player that can unleash a top-tier Ashe or McCree.

Again, the Fuel don’t really care what other teams are doing, even if there’s a clear meta. Dallas has players that are confident in their picks. That includes Sp9rk1e’s Tracer. He flexed his capability on the hero with 57 final blows against the Gladiators.

Even without a hitscan player, the Fuel think their players are good enough to force opponents to bend to their will.

“Other people can try to use two hitscans, but because of how flexible we will be with Sp9rk1e, we can definitely utilize that as like a variable which our flex DPS can also play Tracer and swap to be more versatile,” Go said. “That honestly will end up being a strength of ours. So in the future, you can expect other teams to consider us as a headache.”

Washington and Boston might not want to rely on painkillers, and the Fuel have to not be their own downfall.
