Colonial Pipeline reported Tuesday that computer network problems are preventing planning for upcoming shipments of fuel, just days after its fuel pipeline reopened for normal operations after a week-long ransomware cyberattack.
The company said the disruption wasn’t the result of another cyberattack. Instead, it was caused by Colonial Pipeline’s efforts to make its computer system more secure as it restores service following the cyberattack. The company didn’t say when the issue would be fixed, but Colonial Pipeline fuel deliveries scheduled by shippers are continuing.
Meanwhile, the number of gas stations without fuel due to the pipeline shutdown continues to drop.
Federal officials said last week’s closure of the 5,500-mile pipeline system, the nation’s largest, was the most disruptive cyberattack on record, preventing millions of barrels of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel from flowing to the East Coast from the Gulf Coast.
The FBI is blaming a Russian criminal gang known as DarkSide for the ransomware attack on a vital U.S. pipeline.
According to media reports, more gas stations ran out of fuel in North Carolina than in any other state when the Colonial Pipeline was shut down due to the ransomware cyberattack. It started on May 7.
There were reports of more than 70% of all gas stations in North Carolina being without gas at one point.
According to the GasBuddy website, at least four convenience stores in the Wilkesboros were without gas Tuesday morning. It listed another three in Millers Creek as being without gas.
A GasBuddy report showed that 50% of the state’s gas stations were out of fuel on Monday night. By Tuesday morning, 47% were without gas statewide.
GasBuddy listed $2.67 per gallon as the lowest price for regular gas in Wilkes Tuesday morning. It showed that the cheapest regular gas statewide was $2.50 a gallon in parts of eastern North Carolina.
A spokesman for the Run-In convenience store on Oakwoods Road in Wilkesboro said the only time it didn’t have gas during the shortage was part of the day on May 13. The impact of the shortage first became obvious in Wilkes on May 12 and worsened as people rushed to buy gas.
