San Francisco snaps Dallas’ seven match win streak as Fuel miss opportunity to stay on top of Overwatch - The Dallas Morning News

The jury is out and the Dallas Fuel aren’t invincible. A 3-1 loss to the San Francisco Shock Sunday evening snapped a seven-match win streak for a Fuel team hot off a May Melee title.

There are worse teams to be defeated by, especially in thrilling fashion as the Fuel went five maps with the two-time defending Overwatch League champions. Dallas doesn’t see it that way though. This was a missed opportunity -- a chance to stay at the top.

Dallas (3-3) had its moments. Clutch plays out of Lee “Fearless” Eui-Seok and Kwon “Fielder” Joon, but also stretches of poor ultimate usage and disjointed team fights. It was still enough to take the Shock the distance, but not enough to get a second win over San Francisco this season.

“It’s just about adapting. We have to be able to catch and adapt to whatever they’re doing right, and come up with a solution,” Fuel head coach Yun “RUSH” Hee-won said via interpreter. “We have to be very prompt about that. Yes, there are probably areas that we did really well but definitely had more areas that we didn’t do well as compared to the enemy team.”

The Fuel wish they could have Ilios and Busan back. Both maps went three rounds, and each were ultimately decided by one team fight. It’s easy to nitpick specific moments on those maps too.

Fielder used his ultimate on Moira in a fight that was unwinnable. Kim “Sp9rk1e” Yeong-han was the first to fall in decisive DPS duels. Also the Fuel were put in a 2-0 hole after losing decisively on Dorado. That was the map that would haunt Yun the most.

“Immediately I think of Dorado because it feels like we haven’t played that map in a while,” Yun said. “So it felt like a lot of the players forgot how to play that map, which was the biggest thing. There were a lot of mistakes.

“I feel like they’re maybe a little too excited and they overextended and they went overboard.”

The difference on Dorado was Lim “Glister” Gil-seog’s dominance on Widowmaker. Of course, the Fuel still don’t have a hitscan player in Dallas until Kim “Pine” Do-hyeon is able to get his visa and move to be with his new team.

But that didn’t matter when the Fuel swept the same Shock (5-1) group on May 2. Dallas perhaps spoiled its following with that furious run to a franchise-first tournament win. It didn’t matter that it didn’t have a hitscan player yet. The Fuel forced their own meta.

That’s harder to do with Sombra and Tracer out of the picture for hero bans, Yun said. There are options the Fuel had on Dorado to counter Glister, but they didn’t do them. So not having their own hitscan star was more prevalent.

“Having a hitscan player is a lot more convenient to have around,” Yun said. “It’s easier to go against any other teams with a hitscan player and it’s a variable for the other team to always wonder about. But given that the other teams know that we don’t have that, it’s like a huge disadvantage.”

Many OWL teams are giving a different look from the Fuel in team compositions. Orisa is a more common pick, with ranged damage heroes being selected too.

That’s not how the Fuel like to play. Dallas wants to be in its opponent’s face, engaging fast and ending fights quickly. Lee is almost too good on Winston to not force that style of play. Losing Tracer and Sombra takes out some of those options, though the Fuel should still be favored in both of their matches next weekend against Florida and Vancouver.

The Fuel are still towards the top of the North America table, only trailing Houston (7-1) now. But they are beatable, even if it takes a two-time defending champ in a scorcher of a Sunday match.
