It was 15 years ago when Bobby Ray Elementary counselor Gretchen Angus brought the FUEL Program to Warren County.
“She saw that lots of children would come to school on Monday and look like they didn’t have much to eat over the weekend,” said her daughter, Mary Wanamaker.
Gretchen died unexpectedly in June and Mary wants to carry on her memory. That’s why she’s started the Getchen Angus Memorial FUEL Food Drive which is currently underway and accepting donations until Dec. 13.
FUEL bags are sent home with students in need on Fridays. The goal is to provide them something to eat over the weekend when there might not be much to eat around their house. The program is now countywide and serves about 350 students each week.
“There are now countless individuals, churches, and organizations that sponsor the FUEL program every year by providing donations and packing bags each week,” said Wanamaker. “For all of those people, I sincerely thank you for the hard work and dedication you have put into the program. I know my mom would be smiling from ear to ear to see how much support FUEL continues to receive from the community and how many children and families it continues to help every week.”
As a kindergarten teacher at Hickory Creek Elementary, Wanamaker sees the need for food first-hand.
“I am a teacher myself in the Warren County School System so I continuously see the impact the FUEL program makes in the lives of students, and I thought naming an annual food drive specifically for the program in her honor would be fitting,” said Wanamaker. “Anybody who knew my mom for even a minute knew she had the most humble, giving, and beautiful soul. My hope is to bring out these traits in others through this food drive.”
