A crude oil supertanker caught fire in the Persian Gulf, west of the Strait of Hormuz, prompting a warning from naval authorities in the U.K. for ships in the region to exercise extreme caution.
The U.K.’s Maritime Trade Operations said the fire started northwest of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. Dispatches in the area said the ship was ablaze about 20 miles off the coast of Sharjah. The cause of the fire was unknown.
“There was a distress call for a fire from the Zoya 1, [a] very large crude carrier,” a Greek master from another ship in the area said. “It doesn’t look like it was loaded.”
Brokers said the vessel is owned by Ullib Shipping Inc. which has offices in Singapore. The company couldn’t be immediately reached. The ship has a crew of 16 Indians and Pakistanis who have been stuck aboard for more than a year due to an ownership dispute. Emirati officials said they were being evacuated.
The fire comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East. Earlier in January, the U.S. killed a top Iranian general in Iraq, to which Iran responded with strikes on American forces there.
The U.S. blames Iran for five tanker attacks last year near the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world’s oil passes.
Last week, Saudi Arabia’s air defense forces intercepted missiles aimed at Saudi Aramco oil facilities, officials in the kingdom said Wednesday, after Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen said they had targeted Aramco and other sites in Saudi Arabia.
