Allies of a renegade general have blocked a key oil-export pipeline in western Libya, forcing additional production cuts a day after a port blockade had already halved the country’s output, the national oil company said.
The state-run National Oil Corp. said the Libyan National Army, a militia led by Gen. Khalifa Haftar, had shut an export pipeline, leading to reduced production at two western oil fields, Sharara and el-Feel, which normally pump a total of 400,000 barrels a day.
It wasn’t immediately clear how much of that production was lost.
The news comes a day after other allies of Gen. Haftar ordered the closure of ports under their control in central and eastern Libya. Those closures cut total output by 700,000 barrels a day from the country’s daily output of 1.3 million barrels, officials said.
The cuts come as the U.S., Russia, Turkey and other world powers meet at a conference in Berlin aimed at starting talks to resolve the conflict.
The Libyan shutdown comes after tensions have escalated in other parts of the Middle East.
Earlier this month, the U.S. killed a top Iranian general in Iraq. Tehran retaliated with strikes on U.S. forces there. Producers in the region fear they could be caught in a broader conflict after Saudi oil facilities were attacked by missiles and drones in September. Washington and Riyadh have accused Iran of being behind those attacks, which Tehran has denied.
