Letters to the Editor, OIL: Drill deeper for reason - Coeur d'Alene Press

Open letter to all you guys who think we should keep drilling for oil:

What’s your plan for the future? We have already gone past “peak oil” production and are having to go to more remote and difficult places to find it and get it to the surface. And no matter where we drill it is very destructive to our environment, and I’m not talking about climate change. Oil production is very polluting to the immediate locale, is extremely disruptive to indigenous cultures and it pollutes our air and water. Have you ever seen a picture of the Canadian Tar Sands oil site? It literally looks like hell.

Just as important, though, is our plan for the future. What is it? How do we transition from a fossil fuel based society to renewable fuel sources? Do we wait until the bitter end when oil runs out (we don’t know when that is) or do we start planning and transitioning now so we can do it slowly and carefully?

For me, good leadership, good government, thinks about these things and guides us toward solutions. It doesn’t pretend the problem doesn’t exist, or worse, let future generations worry about it. It doesn’t roll back environmental protections that we have struggled for 30 years to get into place to make it easier for big oil to continue business as usual. Good government would be encouraging innovation and research into solving this huge issue instead of criticizing opponents of the “drill baby drill” mindset.
